Sweet 16 Day 1
6 BYU vs 2 Alabama - This game should be the highest-scoring of the whole weekend. I think BYU has the deeper team, while Bama has the better overall talent. This game will come down to who gets it done better in the paint: Nelson or Keita? Whichever player wins that matchup down low should have the edge in this ballgame. Another factor to keep an eye on is free throws; BYU shoots 70%, and Bama shoots 71%. Those should be the two keys that they focus on heading into the game.
4 Maryland vs 1 Florida - Maryland escaped last weekend with a game-winning shot by future top-10 pick Queen. Maryland is a matchup nightmare for teams that can't guard two bigs at the same time. Even though Florida hasn't faced this matchup too many times, I think they have enough scoring to overcome it, just like they did against UConn. I also believe that not every single 1-seed will make the Final Four this year, and I know Houston is not going to lose to Purdue. That leaves three 1-seeds, and I would lean toward Florida to win, but I think Maryland will cover.
4 Arizona vs 1 Duke - Duke is a great team and has the top pick in next year's draft. They are playing an Arizona team that many have largely written off in this game. I'm not sure about that perspective, as they have size and shot-making ability to compete. They also have a former Tar Heel leading the way for Arizona, so you know he’s going to “get off the bus” for this one. This is similar to the Maryland vs. Florida game, where I like Duke to win but Arizona to cover.
10 Arkansas vs 3 Texas Tech - This is a tough spot to be in if you are Texas Tech or a fan of theirs. A Hall of Fame coach is coming in as the underdog, while his team is on a run that brings their leading scorer back from injury just in time. Everything about this game screams "pick Arkansas." I am confused about the spread for a team that struggled against UNC Wilmington.
