NFL DPOY Myles Garrett Request Trade

NFL DOPY Trade Request

Star defensive end Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns requested a trade off the team Monday afternoon (you can see his statement here). This may come as a shock to most, but when you consider the direction of this franchise, you will understand the reason. They have no quarterback, an aging running back, no true WR1, a good tight end, and one of the worst offensive lines in the league. On the other side of the ball, the only help Myles has had, for the most part, is Denzel Ward. When your leading tackler is a safety and a cornerback nine out of ten times, your defense isn't any good at this level.

The real question is: where is he going to go? The main thing he claims to want is to win a championship. So, that wipes out half of the NFL to start. Let’s take a look at teams that could use a Hall of Fame-level defensive end for a Super Bowl run next year (AFC North teams excluded; I hope the Browns aren’t that dumb).

Rams: They are middle of the pack when it comes to salary. Myles makes them a title threat for next season. They are also shopping Cooper Kupp, and if Cleveland is drafting a quarterback in April, it would help the development of their QB to have a guy like Cooper in the building. The Rams are also known for going all-in, and I can see them making one more title run with the core they have now, minus Aaron Donald.

Chargers: The Chargers have way bigger priorities than defensive end right now, but we know how much that coaching family tree loves defense, so don’t be surprised if the other team in L.A. takes a swing at him as well, especially with Khalil Mack due for free agency.

Commanders: They just played in an NFC Championship game with a rookie quarterback. If he wants to win a championship, as he claims, it’s almost a no-brainer. The problem here would be the scheme, and I don’t think they would be so quick to move off of who got them to where they are.

Packers: A young team that is good and looking for an extra piece that would push them over the top in a tough NFC North. He would walk in and be the best player on the roster, and it wouldn't be close, which is scary for a team that made the playoffs.

Eagles: They don’t need him at all, but if they lose this Sunday, they will once again be looking to make a move like they did last offseason by grabbing the best running back on the market. Myles’ agent works for Klutch Sports, which also has ties in Philly by representing DeVonta Smith and Jalen Hurts.

No matter where he goes, he might command the biggest haul for an active player in recent memory. I would expect the deal to include 2-3 Day 1 or 2 draft picks along with 1 or 2 starters. If you are not willing to offer that, the odds of getting him are slim. He is also going into his age 30 season with 2 years left on his contract. Chances like this don’t come around that often, so jump at it when you get the chance.
